Conditions prior preparation of the support and application

If the support or substrate fails to meet the necessary conditions, the Microcement guarantees will not be applicable.

Pre-application Conditions

Cleaning.

The substrate should be clean and free from dust and grease.

Level or Flatness.

Micro-cement is applied in layers no greater than 1mm, and their total should not exceed four millimetres, thus issues of flatness cannot be resolved with this material, any irregularities of the support must be resolved prior to application. Micro-cement can be applied to floors, walls and even ceilings, and the final result will depend on the support and the skill of the applicator.

Consistency.

The base of the application must be stable. Those supports or substrates with powdery mortars or loose tiles are unsuitable. Depending on their condition, they will have to be removed or consolidated with fast-setting mortars with shrinkage compensation.

Free from Moisture.

If there is moisture in the support, Micro-cement should not be applied. First, it will be necessary to determine its origin in order to eliminate it. The use a humidity meter is highly recommended to guarantee that humidity never exceeds 5%.

The support or substrate must have undergone the hardening process sufficiently. The temperature and relative humidity of the environment must be taken into account, together with the ventilation of the work area, all of which affects the drying process of the mortars, and either accelerates or delays the hardening or setting process.

Protection of the work area

The work area must be protected adequately, together with those surfaces not to be treated, as Micro-cement sticks with great force and is difficult to clean when dried. Commonly used protection materials should be employed, such as painter's tapes, protective paper and plastic sheeting covering everything.

Recommended support in swimming pools

Micro-cement is applied on projected concrete or on sprayed concrete or shotcrete concrete, conditional to the support being clean, consolidated and in a good, level condition. Do not apply over glass mosaic.

Support or Substrate Preparation

The application of Micro-cement begins with priming the support using adhesion promoter and the placement of fiberglass mesh.

Primers with adhesion promoters

Adhesion promoters fulfil several functions: to ensure better adhesion on any type of support, to increase cohesion to it, to improve the application speed of the first coating of Micro-cement, and to prevent the premature loss of moisture from the micro-mortar.

The supports have different absorption capabilities, therefore various solutions should be used: promoters for non-absorbent surfaces, for absorbent surfaces, for surfaces that need some degree of consolidation, or promoters for surfaces that may have moisture problems.

In order to coat these types of substrates with little or no porosity, Primacem Plus must be used, a promoter for non-absorbent surfaces. The process will be as follows:

  • Fill joints with Microbase and allow to dry for 24 hours. If the cracks/lines are very fine, Microdeck or even Microfino can be used.
  • Apply a layer of Primacem PLUS using a roller along with the Builtex mesh
  • Allow to dry for 24 hours, add one coat of Primacem PLUS and apply the second coat of
    Microbase.

Micro-cement over plaster, plasterboard and MDF panels

On absorbent substrates Primacem Abs should be used, following these steps:

  • Apply the primer with a normal painter’s roller.
  • Let the bonding take effect, for a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 24 hours, before placing the mesh in position and adding the first coat of Micro-cement.

Micro-cement over cement mortar, projected concrete or on sprayed or shotcrete concrete

For absorbent surfaces that may require a degree of consolidation, the following procedure is required:

  • Apply Acricem primer with a normal painter’s roller.
  • Let the bonding take effect, for a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 24 hours, before placing the mesh in position and adding the first coat of Micro-cement.

Micro-cement over substrates that may hold moisture

In consolidated substrates where moisture may appear, a barrier based on epoxy resins must be applied, in order to prevent moisture from affecting the Micro-cement. Impoxy solves the problems of humidity permitting the application of Micro-cement coatings to the support.

  • Prime with Impoxy at 0.35 kg / m2 using a roller
  • Sprinkle with dry silica sand of 0.3-0.8 mm at 1kg / m2
  • Allow to dry for 24 hours
  • Remove excess sand by sweeping and vacuuming
  • Apply Impoxy using a trowel at 3 kg/m2

Installation of the mesh

Micro-cement Topciment does not crack, as long as the base upon which it has been placed also does not crack. Topciment mesh is an additional safeguard in Micro-cement applications, as it is a high- performance mesh, flexible, resistant and very easy to work with, it can easily be coated with Microbase, without making lumps. The mesh allows a decoupling of the coating application on the support.

Fixing the mesh:

The mesh can be fixed with Primacem Plus adhesion promoter, or when used as Primacem ABS promoter or Acricem resin, with the first coat of Microcemento Base. The mesh strips must be overlapped a bit and two coats of Microbase should always be applied in order to completely cover the framework.
