Topciment® develops GEOSEAL, a sustainable countertop-renewal project conceived as a next-generation alternative to microcement

Refurbishing a countertop usually means, in most cases, removing the existing surface: demolition work, rubble, transport, and an environmental footprint whose true cost is rarely measured with precision. At Topciment®, we work every day to ensure that this logic no longer remains the norm.

Sustainable innovation is one of our strategic pillars. That’s why our commitment to R&D&I focuses on developing responsible construction solutions aligned with the circular economy and designed to reduce waste. Within this framework, GEOSEAL emerges: an industrial research project that, with the support of ERDF funds, proposes a shift in paradigm—rehabilitating countertops in situ, restoring performance and aesthetics through a more efficient, cleaner intervention aligned with the circular economy.

From replacement to refurbishment: what GEOSEAL proposes

GEOSEAL is developing an advanced, sustainable technological solution to renovate worn or outdated kitchen countertops in situ—as well as other building elements—without construction work and without generating waste, thanks to the combined application of state-of-the-art coatings in the sector.

This decorative system — similar to microcement in both finish and application — offers offers a more advanced, eco-friendly alternative, as its formulation contains neither cement nor polyurethane. These components are replaced by next-generation materials that deliver excellent mechanical and chemical performance, along with a lower carbon footprint.

What this hybrid system delivers

GEOSEAL doesn’t simply ‘cover a surface’—it aims for a step change in performance. In practical terms, the project seeks to:
- Enhance mechanical and chemical performance to withstand intensive use and keep long-term results intact..
- Deliver aesthetic upgrades to refresh and restore surfaces without replacing them.
- Significantly reduce the environmental impact associated with conventional renovations.

GEOSEAL and its alignment with S3 CV 2021–2027

Sustainable innovation is a strategic pillar that shapes Topciment®’s roadmap. That’s why we are increasingly committed to R&D&I, focused on designing innovative, eco-friendly construction solutions. This conviction has now materialised in our latest achievement: the launch of this project.

GEOSEAL is part of the Smart Specialisation Strategy of the Valencian Community (S3 CV 2021–2027), specifically under the priority area ‘Towards a circular and low-carbon economy’. Within this framework, the project is structured around four strategic objectives that were essential to securing its approval:

  1. Reuse and add value to existing surfaces, minimizando la demolición de encimeras con su consiguiente generación de residuos de obra.
  2. Develop more sustainable materials, combinando recubrimientos de baja huella de carbono con tecnología avanzada.
  3. Reduce the environmental impact of the renovation sector by promoting cleaner, faster and more efficient interventions.
  4. Optimise industrial and application processes, facilitating technology transfer to manufacturers, installers and renovation companies.

Breakdown of the investment in the GEOSEAL

The GEOSEAL project has a total investment of 330.385,16 €, spread across the 2025–2027 period, and is funded by the European Union through European Funds (FEDER), with the support of the Valencian Community’s innovation programmes.

The annual breakdown is as follows:
- 2025: 57.353,52 €
- 2026: 89.110,84 €
- 2027: 183.920,80 €

With this initiative, Topciment® strengthens its unwavering commitment to developing more responsible construction solutions, ready to meet today’s and tomorrow’s environmental challenges without compromising performance or aesthetic quality. Because advancing a more sustainable renovation model for the refurbishment and rehabilitation sector is everyone’s responsibility.
