What is microcement? Uses, types, application and advantages

The Topciment microcement is a decorative coating made up of cement, water-based resins, additives and mineral pigments that can be applied on a multitude of vertical and horizontal surfaces thanks to its great adherence. This construction material stands out because it is placed directly on the existing material: tiles, plasterboard, tiles, marble, terrazzo or plaster, among many others. With barely any work and a thickness of only 3 millimeters, a quick renovation of spaces is achieved.

A coating at the forefront, without joints and ideal for both outdoor and indoor spaces. A continuous coating applicable on floors, walls, stairs, ceilings, pools and even furniture. Its versatility has led to it being increasingly present in renovations of private homes and in commercial premises and large surfaces such as sports centers, industrial warehouses, hotels or restaurants.

Topciment offers you a wide range of possibilities and decorative finishes, where the limit is set by you. Give the rooms a unique and personal character thanks to the different textures (thick, medium or fine); the wide variety of microcement colors; and the different finishes that our varnishes and metallic coatings allow.

Complicated renovations are over. With Topciment microcement any combination and style is possible. We are looking forward to helping and advising you.

Where can microcement be applied?

The decorative solutions of microcement are endless. Hence its uses are so varied. From microcement stairs or microcement pools to furniture coated with microcement. Although the quintessential use of microcement is on floors and walls of kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor spaces like terraces.

Whatever the surface to be coated with microcement, at Topciment we care about the final result. Therefore, in our eagerness to achieve an optimal, versatile and quality product, that lasts over time and adapts to the needs of the market, we have achieved the balance between hardness and flexibility.

And what does this mean? That our microcement can cover any surface, no matter how large, achieving a continuous pavement without joints or cracks. In this way we avoid dirt areas, thus facilitating cleaning and disinfection, contributing to obtaining germ-free and bacteria-free places.

In addition, our microcements guarantee high resistance in the areas most exposed to traffic as well as to the most aggressive cleaning products. Hence the high demand for microcement in kitchens and microcement bathrooms.

Frequently asked questions about microcement

Despite its low thickness, one of the properties of this material is its resistance and hardness. Each of the Topciment systems is indicated for a space. Thus, products with coarser granulometries, such as Sttandard Microbase (L, XL, XXL), are recommended for floors. For walls, on the other hand, products with finer granulometries, such as Sttandard Microfino (S, M), are suitable.

There are multiple factors that can influence the strength and hardness of this coating. Among them, the support on which the microcement will be applied, the type of microcement selected, or the sealer.

+information

MASA(g): 400

Resultado: Clase I. Sin fisuras ni escamado Clase I: ≥ 4 Nm

Microcement is an elegant and versatile choice for coating surfaces and giving them a modern and durable aesthetic. However, its proper maintenance is essential to preserve its beauty and functionality over time. Just like with other delicate surfaces, such as natural wood parquet floors, the proper care of microcement requires attention to certain details.

1. Do not drag furniture: When moving chairs, tables, and other furniture on the microcement pavement, scratches or marks can occur. It is essential to lift and support, never drag. And, in any case, always use felt pads on the legs of the furniture to protect your microcement floors. It is recommended to avoid furniture with pointed legs, as they will cause damage to the microcement surface.

2. Avoid blows and falls of sharp objects: Impacts can cause chips or notches in the coating, compromising its integrity and aesthetics. It is recommended to handle sharp or pointed elements carefully, as well as to avoid dropping objects on the microcement. It is advisable to implement preventive measures in certain situations to avoid damage, such as the use of coasters for hot objects or protective blankets during the handling of heavy furniture.

3. Do not use cheap adhesive tapes: Choosing low-quality adhesive tapes can result in the removal of sections of the surface, which will leave unsightly marks and glue residues that will attract dirt. Opting for guaranteed quality tapes is essential to maintain the integrity of the microcement surface.

4. Preventing heat marks on countertops: Microcement is a popular option for countertops, but it is very important to avoid placing hot pans or pots directly on the surface. Objects at high temperatures can leave marks on microcement countertops, something that also happens with other materials such as quartz or granite. The use of suitable boards or supports will help to avoid unwanted marks.

5. Use recommended cleaning products: We recommend the exclusive use of cleaners and maintenance waxes tested and approved by Topciment®. The use of non-recommended products can cause problems on the surface of the microcement, compromising its durability and appearance.

Microcement can be applied on almost any type of support: cement mortar, self-leveling, terrazzo, marble, tile, plasterboard or plaster. The application of microcement can also be carried out on vertical, horizontal, indoor and outdoor surfaces. A versatility with which we can create microcement stairs, microcement bathrooms, microcement kitchens and even microcement pools.

Indeed, microcement cannot be applied on natural wood or supports made up of pieces that may dilate differently.

+information

One of the main properties of microcement is its high adhesion. Thanks to this, it is possible to apply microcement over tiles, speeding up renovations and avoiding the demolition of the original coating. As long as the tiles are firm and not loose. In these cases, the use of mesh is necessary to solidify the support.

Topciment microcement on tiles

Microcement on tiles, stoneware or terrazzo

Optimal conditions and state of the surface to be coated
The preparation of the support is as important as the application of microcement. If the support does not meet the necessary conditions, we will not be able to apply the microcement with guarantees. The surface must be leveled, consolidated, free of dirt and with a humidity level below 5%.

In the event that the support on which the microcement is to be applied is a mortar, it must have set at least four weeks before applying the microcement, to control the cracks that may appear during the process of curing.

State of the surface to be reversed

Microcement pools
At Topciment we have developed Atlanttic, a line of two-component microcement designed exclusively for spaces in constant contact with water such as pools. And it is that microcement pools are trending and will continue to be so due to the wide advantages of this decorative coating.

Microcement on natural wood or parquet
Parquet or natural wood floors have a large number of joints, the boards expand in different directions causing difficult to control tensions, which can cause cracks in the coating, so they are not suitable for applying microcement directly on them. In these cases it is necessary to lift the existing floor and prepare the support prior to the product placement.

More and more people are opting to install underfloor heating. But, can microcement be applied over underfloor heating? Yes, microcement can be installed without problems on underfloor heating. A heating start-up protocol must be carried out to prevent the cracks caused by temperature changes in the slab from reproducing in the microcement.

+information

The startup protocol will be as follows:

1. Turn on the heating at least 4 weeks after the cement mortar has been placed.

2. Keep the water entering the circuits at 25 °C for 2 or 3 days. Then, gradually increase the water temperature to 45 °C and maintain it for several days.

3. Turn off the heating at least 48 h before starting the microcement installation. The maximum floor temperature should be 18 °C.

Microcement pavements must be applied on cementitious mortars that have reached an advanced stage of setting. This happens after three or four weeks, depending on the weather. In any case, we must ensure that the mortar is practically dry. For this, there must be a maximum of 5% humidity in the support, which we will check with a relative humidity meter.

We recommend using quality self-leveling cement mortars.

Supports with powdery mortars are not suitable as the state of the application base must be consistent and otherwise it will have to be consolidated.

After applying the microcement, we should wait at least 48 hours before gradually turning the heating back on (+5 °C each day).

Always change the temperature gradually at the beginning and end of the heating usage period.

Make sure the relative humidity of the air in the rooms is not too low.

Always avoid heat buildup caused by carpets and rugs or lack of space between furniture and the floor.

Important! Between the slab and the vertical walls there will always be an expansion joint so that it can expand. If this indication is not respected, cracks may appear.

Microcement is not waterproof by itself, but it can be if a sealer is used as a finish and applied in this way the microcement in bathrooms, showers or wet areas. At Topciment we have created the sealer Topsealer WT (water-based polyurethane varnish), a sealer with which to guarantee the waterproofness of the microcement.

Yes, depending on the type of microcement, texture that is left and sealer used, we can make the microcement slip-resistant.

+information

Thanks to microcement we can achieve any non-slip surface. Depending on the type of microcement and texture, greater or lesser slip resistance (degree of slipperiness) is obtained. From least to greatest slipperiness we have: Microstone for being highly textured, Microdeck with a smooth texture, and finally Microfino which is not suitable for floors.

The different finishes for floors and their textures
Floors are classified based on their slip resistance value, and from least to greatest resistance there are 3 classes, class 1, 2 and 3.
With Topciment microcements we can achieve any of the required classes. Microdeck sealed with polyurethane corresponds to class 1 but if you simply apply a coat of pore filler and one of polyurethane, you can reach class 2. If Microstone is used, which contains particles of aggregate coarser than traditional microcement, class 3 is reached. The difference in texture can be appreciated at first glance.
The anti-slip characteristics of the surface and difficulty of cleaning must be taken into account. The greater the slip resistance, the more difficult it is to clean the surface due to the texturing.
Here we inform you more about the cleaning of microcement.

Anti-slip finishes and classification according to their slipperiness
In order to limit the risk of slipping, the floors of buildings or areas of Public Residential, Health, Educational, Commercial, Administrative and Public Attendance use, excluding the null occupancy areas defined in annex SI A of the DB SI, will have a suitable class according to point 3 of this section.
The floors are classified according to their slip resistance value Rd. This value is determined by the pendulum test described in Annex A of the UNE-ENV 12633:2003 standard. The Technical Building Code (CTE) in the document DB SUA-1 (Basic Documents for Use Safety and Accessibility) regulates the slipperiness indices and determines the class that a floor should have depending on its use. The floor is more anti-slip as the Rd value increases.
The floors are classified, according to their slip resistance value Rd, in accordance with what is established in this table:

Slip resistance (Rd)   Class
Rd ≤ 15   0
15 < Rd ≤35   1
35< Rd ≤45   2
Rd > 45   3

Class required for soils based on their location and characteristics
Zonas exteriores, piscinas (2), duchas -> Clase 3

Although the aesthetic finish of polished cement may resemble, it is not the same.
With microcement you get more advantages:

  • Faster and easier to apply.
  • It does not require machinery or heavy tools for its installation.
  • Less work. Less cost. Less time.
  • Lighter, so there are no structural loads.
  • Use in any room, not just ground floors.
  • It doesn't need joints, and no cracks appear when drying.
  • It can be applied both on horizontal and vertical surfaces.

Differences between Microcement and polished cement (troweled concrete) for pavements in terms of components

It is necessary to differentiate between, cement, cement mortar, and concrete. Cement is a component of both mortar and concrete that acts as a binder. Mortar is obtained by mixing sand and water with cement and concrete is a cement mortar to which gravel is added.

While all are solutions for creating pavements, in the case of microcement it is continuous and in the case of polished cement, stamped concrete or troweled concrete it is discontinuous (requiring expansion joints).

CONCRETES
Both the polished concrete, and the stamped concrete, as well as the troweled concrete, consist of a reinforced concrete slab that is given a surface treatment to achieve the final finish. They are discontinuous pavements, as they are slabs, expansion joints are required to prevent cracking.

Troweled concrete: In the case of troweled concrete, a mechanical smoothing is carried out with troweling machines or helicopters.

Troweled concrete

Stamped concrete: While in stamped concrete a stamping with molds is done. Both during the setting process (hardening process of the concrete).

Imprinted concrete

Polished concrete: On the other hand, polished concrete involves applying a surface treatment to achieve the final finish but on fully cured concrete. It consists of a mechanical process of devastation and polishing in which the surface is sanded with a polisher with diamond heads, leaving in view the section of the aggregates that make up the concrete, the final appearance is similar to terrazzo.

Polished and devastated concrete

MICROCEMENT

The microcement is a coating that is applied both on walls and floors, it has an approximate thickness of between 2 and 3 mm, it does not need joints and it does not crack. It adheres very well to any material, it is applied using a steel or rubber trowel.

MORTAR

The troweled mortar would be the smoothing that is done manually to a plastering (layer of mortar about 2 cm thick used to coat a wall)

Microcement low-thickness coating

In this table we summarize features and compare differences, in addition to possible applications.

Features Surface thickness Joints Weight Ideal for:
Topciment Microcement Continuous coating applied with trowel Walls ceilings and floors 2 - 3 mm. It doesn't need joints 0,01 Kn/m2 Reforms without debris, covering tiles, furniture coverings...
Imprinted concrete or stamped concrete Surface treatment of the concrete slab in plastic state Floors 5 -10 cm At most every 25 m2 (e=10 cm) 2,50 Kn/m2 Ideal for parks or public walks. With rustic finishes simulating stone.
Troweled concrete or smoothed cement Surface treatment of the concrete slab during the curing process floors 5 -10 cm At most every 25 m2  (e=10 cm) 2,50 Kn/m2 With a smooth finish, ideal for parking lots and large surfaces
Polished concrete or Polished cement Surface treatment of the already hardened concrete slab Floors 5 -10 cm At most every 25 m2 (e=10 cm) 2,50 Kn/m2 Appearance very similar to terrazzo. Smooth finish, ideal for large surface floors.
Troweled mortar Coating of manual smoothing to a roughcast Walls or floors 2 cm At most every 25 m2 (e=2 cm) 0,50 Kn/m2

Since microcement adheres to the existing material, construction is not necessary, so microcement work can be carried out in a very short time: between three and five days. However, the application of microcement on floors extends this period to a week.

+information

This is a coating that is worked with a prior conditioning of the surface, an application of the material in different layers, and a final protection with sealer.

Each layer of material has its execution and drying time. In addition, special care must be taken in its first week (once the work is finished) as it gradually acquires all its hardness and resistance.

No, it's not necessary. The microcement grows on the surface from 1 to 3 mm thick.
Normally, the clearance with which the doors are placed is 5 mm from the floor; therefore there is enough margin not to have to plane the doors.

One of the most frequent questions about this decorative coating is how to clean the microcement. Although cleaning microcement is simple and water and neutral soap is more than enough, at Topciment we have created exclusive cleaning and care products for microcement to obtain better results over time.

+information

The care of microcement is similar to that of a natural wood parquet. We advise preventing permanent puddles and prolonged contact with moisture. We must avoid leaving wet rugs and towels on the floor or pots that lose liquid. We should also keep the surface free of stones or grit, which can scratch the coating when stepped on. Avoid hitting and rubbing with hard objects.

Although microcement offers high resistance to chemical products, the cleaning of microcement should be done with neutral soaps, never with aggressive products or descalers. We will avoid products such as chlorine, bleach, ammonia, soaps and detergents in general, as they can damage the protective film.

Initial care

The microcement reaches the values of hardness, chemical resistances, and desired watertightness one month after its application. The greatest risk of defect is in the first two weeks. It will be walkable with great care two days after the sealing of the pavements, and walkable normally one week later.

We recommend avoiding dragging heavy objects so as not to damage the surface. To move furniture: better to lift and support, never drag. It will be necessary to protect the pavement from furniture (metal legs, sharp surfaces), and from objects with abrasive or considerably heavy contact surfaces, with caps or felts.

At Topciment, manufacturers of microcement, we have a wide range of microcement colors to cover any type of surface. Now, can microcement lose color over time? No, our microcement colors behave stably, without undergoing alterations over time and without being affected by the weather.

+information

The pigments we use to make our dyes are of mineral origin. It is worth distinguishing between mineral origin pigments and organic origin pigments. Mineral origin pigments are the ones that behave best against the alkalinity of cement. Organic pigments (molecules containing carbon), are not stable to the weather, they end up transforming into other compounds without pigmentation properties or migrating to the surface, so initial tones end up disappearing almost completely after some time. Inorganic pigments generally maintain stability in mortars and concretes.

The application of microcement is a craft job, factors such as the load of material or the roller used in the sealing can cause small differences in shine between the sample and the work... Catalogs are sealed with a roller, if the sealing is done with a gun, a little more shine is achieved.

Yes, different colors of microcement can be combined on the same surface, even several finishes. The key is to clearly define the surface where you want to apply another color.

We always recommend applying fiber mesh, especially on tile floors and walls, just like in the joints between plasterboard plates, it is used to arm the base microcement and prevent cracks due to the tensions of the microcement support. The final decision to put it or not is up to the applicator, of course, but if they do not add it, warn them of the problems that may arise.

The drying time between layers of the sealer or varnish will depend on several factors. Such as weather conditions, the degree of relative humidity, the ambient temperature of the room, if it is a closed and humid space like a bathroom, if the sun hits directly, etc.

In any case, we will always try under any circumstances to leave the maximum drying time possible between layers to avoid the formation of white spots due to the surface still being wet. The minimum drying time between layers is 4 hours for the Presealer and 24 hours for the Topsealer.

The price of microcement varies depending on many factors. Only a professional applicator of this decorative coating can accurately state the price per square meter of this coating.

The displacement of the professionals, the type of microcement selected, or the support on which the microcement has to be applied are some of the factors that will condition the price of the m2 of microcement.

Microcement is a coating that tolerates low temperatures once placed thanks to the use of a protective varnish. However, care must be taken when applying this material in the winter season. In this sense, and to avoid possible whitish stains, cracks and crevices, it is necessary to heat the work area (20-25ºC) to obtain an optimal result.

Just as it happens in winter, in the summer season it is necessary to take a series of precautions if works are carried out with this material. Even though it is a coating that perfectly withstands, once applied, the sun's rays. A UV light resistance that has expanded the bet of projects with microcement in outdoor spaces such as terraces and pools.

In summer, it is necessary to avoid applying the microcement in the middle of the day and in the afternoon. Time slots in which the support is very hot and, if the material is placed, it could contract and expand the surface. During the rest of the day there is no problem.
