The European Union rewards Topciment ®'s commitment to sustainability in its ECOATINGS project

At Topciment®, we believe in a future where full sustainability is possible—a future in which the construction sector must play a decisive role in achieving that goal. That’s why we work tirelessly to offer environmentally friendly decorative solutions, without compromising the excellence that defines our products and is evident in their performance.

Our commitment to sustainability has led us to launch the “ECOATINGS” project, which highlights the value of the new eco-sustainable coatings we have developed to date—and will continue to develop—for the construction sector. Specifically, various circular microcements and nano-structured hybrid biofilms.

Over the past two years, from December 2022 to October 2024, we have invested nearly €348,000 in the innovation and development of coatings that reduce the ecological footprint. This effort has been recognised through a grant co-financed by the European Union and the Spanish Ministry of Finance, amounting to a total of €115,698.

This European funding represents a major boost to our mission of delivering products that support the circular economy without compromising on quality. Our firm commitment is to continue investing in R&D&I to offer increasingly efficient and responsible alternatives that meet the current challenges of the construction sector and significantly reduce environmental impact.

With this goal in mind, we will continue to promote the reuse of available resources and the implementation of the most advanced technology in ecological coatings. Because the future is built with materials that care for the present.

Main objectives and most notable achievements of the "ECOATINGS" project

The main objective of the project was the development of eco-sustainable coatings that significantly reduce the carbon footprint and promote the circular economy in the construction sector. To this end, the following key goals were addressed:

  • Innovation in sustainable coatings: nano-structured biofilms with low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions were formulated, incorporating recycled materials to improve the environmental profile.
  • Substitution of petrochemical polymers: a fluorine-free hybrid sol-gel varnish was developed, based on silicon alkoxides, offering high sustainability and minimal VOC emissions.
  • Use of locally sourced recycled aggregates: conventional aggregates were replaced by recycled materials, resulting in microcements with excellent rheology, strength, and hydrophobic properties—without the use of toxic substances.
  • Market leadership: the advances position Topciment® as a benchmark in sustainable and innovative construction solutions, with the capacity to launch products offering clear competitive advantages.

The project has been successfully completed, meeting all the proposed objectives. The most notable achievements include:

  • 50% reduction in VOC emissions and elimination of petrochemical materials in favor of sustainable compounds.
  • Integration of industrial waste into new microcements and ecological varnishes, promoting the circular economy.
  • Reduction in the use of conventional cement without compromising technical or mechanical properties.
  • Development of products that address the challenges of decarbonization and sustainable architecture, reinforcing Topciment®'s role as a leader in green innovation.

The project was carried out at Topciment®’s own production facilities located at c/ Roses, nº 33, Manises, Valencia, Spain.
